My gerbil is a maniac! What do i do?

if you put your finger on the outside of the cage, he'll bite through it and if you put your hand in he usually runs away. he chews all the time (He ate through a toilet paper roll in an hour and started to eat through his food dish until i took it out) he doesn't really like the chew sticks i bought him, i think bc they're too big so i give him twigs from outside instead. once he's done with one. he'll chew the bars like a maniac until i give him another one. and i know they're suppose to make a lot of noise but he tries to dig through the tubes. i honestly have not put him in his ball for a while cause i can't get him in! he almost runs away. after constantly feeding him sunflower seeds through the cage, he very rarely sometimes eats them from my hand when it's in the cage but it's the only connection we have.. i feel like he hates me :( i pet him a couple times and he looks like he hates it. i've tried to pet him gently with a stick once through the cage to avoid getting bit and he twitched and kicked and kept moving back. and i've also NEVER seen him in his wheel, is that normal?
