My husband has REALLY got to change his fashion! How do I ask this?

Before me and my husband were married he used to act a bit more wild. He was a big fan of kurt kobain and almost killed himself after his suicide happened. I was never into kurt kobain. I was more into the Belinda Carlisle scene. Anyway, my husband used to dress very nice business-casual most of the time. Last winter his salamander died and it broke all of our hearts. My husband still hasn't gotten over it and not he's always wearing almost all black and blaring terrible music in the car on the way to church or the grocery store. I tried hinting that maybe its time to get back to normal but he just ignored me both times. Our daughter asked if he was okay and all he said was, "Yeah, as if". He is starting to scare me and my daughter and his mother-in-law (my mom). I think I NEED to fix this but I dont know how to go about it. Any suggestions that wont break his heart further?
