How do i connect my laptop to my tv?

I have a Hp laptop and i want to connect it to my tv. I have a VGA cable but everytime i plug it in to both the laptop and the tv the screen comes up fuzzy and the audio is blaring. Do i need a converter/adapter? or a different chord?
